Do you know what lintels are? Have you ever wondered why the piece above your doors and windows are rusting? Here is a brief video explaining the answer to these questions!
It is an easy fix that you could do before putting your house on the market. On the reverse side, this is an easy fix if you see it in a potential home.
It’s Aleks again with Parker Inspections. Ok, so today is going to be a quick one because there is not much explaining to do with it. We are going to be talking about lintels above your doors and windows.
I’ll show you what I’m talking about. Some people have them.
Sometimes they are brick lintels. But, we are talking about these steel lintels right here.
You can tell a little bit here that they are rusted. This one is over a door and this one is over a window. So, basically what we want to see with these steel lintels is we want to see them painted or at least sealed.
They are rusting right now just because over time that steel is going to rust.
What happens – I’ll show you. I have an example over here. But, anytime I see steel lintels that aren’t painted.
I just recommend painting them. Because, what’s going to happen is. Do you see that crack? Obviously, this is a joint so that is where it is going to crack as well.
But, it didn’t help that that lintel over there is not painted. There’s another area right here. You can see that little crack.
These cracks are going to happen because the house is going to move and just normal shrinkage cracks. But, we want to paint the lintels because we can, um, just that won’t be an area that will cause anymore cracks.
Other than the normal shrinkage cracks. So, lintels. If you have lintels and you see that they are rusting,
It’s super easy. All you have to do is get some sand paper, sand it down a little bit. Get some exterior paint.
You can prime it and paint it. (Check with your handy man). But, get those things seeled up so you don’t have to worry about it causing anymore cracks.
But, that is up to you. I don’t care what color you paint it, but let’s just paint them.
It’s super easy. It is something that we can do and I don’t have to put it on the report as a deficiency.
